What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, lips, gums, or the roof of your mouth.  It appears as a sore that won’t go away and can also cause pain in the mouth or ear. These factors can increase your chances of getting oral cancer.

They can also help detect it early on so it can successfully be treated quicker. In fact, approximately 84% of oral cancer cases can be identified early by a dental health professional. Knowing sooner can also prevent the cancer from progressing into a more severe form.

What to Expect

During an oral cancer screening, your dentist will ask you about your oral health. Make sure to be honest and let your dentist know if you smoke or have poor oral hygiene. They’ll find out one way or another, so be upfront about it from the beginning!

Next, you will undergo a thorough physical and visual exam. Your dentist will feel your face, neck, head, and oral cavities to check for any lumps. Your dentist will also look inside of your mouth and check for abnormalities.
