Why Do You Need Dental Fillings?

When you get a cavity, the decay from the tooth will spread unless the tooth is restored. Therefore, it’s important to not leave one untreated. Fillings are there to prevent you from having to go through more significant procedures like dental implants or root canals!

What Happens During a Dental Filling Process?

Your dentist will make sure you feel comfortable before beginning the procedure. First, you’ll get an injection in your gums to numb the area around the affected tooth. Next, your dentist will remove the decay from the tooth. That’s generally done with a drill, which you won’t feel since you’ll be numb!

Once the decay is removed, your dentist will restore the tooth by filling the area where the decay previously was. Afterward, we’ll adjust the filling, so it’s perfectly aligned to your natural bite. Depending on how large the filling is and how many teeth need to be filled, the time will vary, but it will typically be less than an hour.

Types of Fillings

There are different kinds of fillings. Each kind does its own part in preventing further damage to the tooth. You should discuss with your dentist about which kind is best for you.

The different kinds of fillings are as follows:

• Composite – This is the most common kind of filling. They’re made of powdered glass and acrylic resin. They blend in with the tooth the best.
• Glass ionmeter – This type of filling is more ideal for children. It has the shortest life span. It produces fluoride around the tooth and is recommended for children who are shedding teeth.
• Ceramic – This type of filling is made of porcelain and is tooth-colored. They’re more resistant to staining and abrasion.
• Gold – This is the least common kind of filling as well as the most expensive kind. Since it’s made of gold, it’s the most durable. These fillings can last for decades!
